Fortune’s Wheel
‘For certain, what the Fortune list to flee,
Ther may not man the cours of hire withhold.' -Chaucer
Fortune revolves her wheel as wilfully
As water surging up and down a creek:
Swatting once-dreaded monarchs cruelly
Raising the vanquished... only for a while.
She’s deaf to cries, untouched by human grief;
The groaning she provokes just makes her smile.
It’s her hobby - how she proves her power
Impressing people with the marvelous trick
Of conjuring gloom from joy within an hour.
