The Squire's Toast-Wassail
Wassailing
Modern bands of carol singers who go from house to house(if there are any left) are the descendants of the old ‘wassailers’ who started singing all about their towns on Christmas Eve. They presented households with sprigs of mistletoe or holy and were welcomed in to drink their hosts health from the wassail-bowl. The wassail-bowl was filled with warming ‘lamb’s wool,’ strong beer with nutmeg, sugar, and hot roasted apples.
